Benin, Edo – As Nigerians across the country celebrate Christmas, the Edo State Police Command has ramped up security measures, deploying more than 5,000 personnel to ensure public safety during the Yuletide season.
The announcement emphasizes enhanced checkpoints and stop-and-search operations to deter crime and protect lives and property.
In a detailed statement released on December 24, 2025, the police highlighted the necessity of these strategies in response to prevailing crime trends.
"Strategies employed include deployment of roadblocks and checkpoints across major roads in the State," the command stated, noting that officers have been instructed to conduct lawful searches while urging motorists to slow down at critical points.
The move comes after a troubling year where the command recorded eight casualties and four deaths among officers, primarily from encounters with criminals evading checks.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) ASP Eno Ikoedem reinforced the message on Christmas Day with a poignant reminder to the public.
"Over 5,000 officers in Edo are not celebrating Christmas so you can afford to. The least you can do is be polite to these men & women on the road .", Ikoedem quoted an earlier post by the command
This personal appeal underscores the sacrifices made by law enforcement during the holidays, aiming to foster civility and cooperation from citizens.
Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika, leading the initiative, has reiterated a zero-tolerance policy on extortion and unprofessional conduct.
The deployment extends beyond Benin City to cover the entire state, aligning with broader national efforts to maintain peace during festive periods. While Edo State has seen relative calm compared to other regions facing insecurity, such as recent incidents in northern Nigeria, officials stress the importance of public partnership.
"The Command reiterates its commitment to serve by best policing practices and calls for continued partnership," the statement concluded, extending Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year wishes to residents.
This initiative reflects ongoing challenges in Nigeria's security landscape, where holiday periods often see heightened vigilance to prevent opportunistic crimes.
Residents have been advised to remain patient at checkpoints and report any misconduct promptly.
As the Yuletide celebrations continue, the Edo State Police Command's proactive stance aims to ensure a safe and joyous season for all.
