Benin, Edo – A Bolt ride-hailing driver, Godwin Esosa, has accused officers of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) of physical assault and harassment while he waited for a passenger near the Benin Airport exit gate on Tuesday.

‎The incident, reported by the AHMWES Bail is Free Campaign Organization, highlights ongoing concerns over traffic enforcement practices in the state capital.

‎According to a statement from Leftist Dickson John Esq., Secretary General of the AHMWES Bail is Free Campaign Organization, Esosa was booked for a ride from inside Benin Airport. Unable to enter the airport premises due to authority policies restricting ride-hailing vehicles, he coordinated with the passenger to meet at the exit gate near a carwash.

‎Upon arrival, with his engine running while on a call confirming the location, EDSTMA officers allegedly approached aggressively.

‎Esosa claimed one officer grabbed the steering wheel while another entered the passenger side, attempting to seize his keys and threatening to damage the gearbox if he moved the vehicle.

‎Additional officers reportedly joined, dragging him from the car and delivering punches that caused swelling and injury to his eyes. In self-defense, Esosa said he resisted as they attempted to tow the vehicle which he lay on the ground to prevent it.

‎The officers ultimately removed both vehicle plate numbers, assaulted him further, tore his shirt, and left with the plates.

‎Visibly injured, Esosa contacted the campaign organization, which accompanied him to EDSTMA's office along Sapele Road. The Head of Operations reportedly condemned the officers' actions as inhumane, contacted the towing unit supervisor, and ordered the officers to return for investigation.

‎Following discussions, the agency returned the plate numbers, issued apologies, and committed to sanctions against the involved officers per internal policy.

‎The organization had also sought a new shirt and coverage of medical expenses for Esosa's injuries.

‎The AHMWES Bail is Free Campaign Organization praised the proactive response from EDSTMA leadership, emphasizing their commitment to justice.

‎The group, known for advocating against illegal detention and promoting fair treatment, reiterated its slogan: "See something! Say something," vowing to continue fighting for an egalitarian society.

‎EDSTMA has not issued an independent public statement on the incident as of press time.
