Benin, Edo – In a significant step toward strengthening judicial administration and governance in Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo on Wednesday inaugurated the Edo State Judicial Service Commission, emphasizing the need for integrity, diligence, and people-centered service.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Government House in Benin City, also saw the swearing-in of the Governing Council of Edo State Polytechnic, Usen.
The event preceded a courtesy visit by the Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, who announced Edo as the host of the South-South Zonal Headquarters of the NIS.
Addressing the newly inaugurated members of the Judicial Service Commission, Governor Okpebholo described their appointment as a "call to duty" and urged them to prioritize the interests of Edo people.
"I congratulate the just-inaugurated members and at the same time let you know that this is a call to duty,” the Governor said, adding, “Edo people are watching. It is one thing to come into government, and it’s another to serve the people diligently. So, I urge you to serve Edo people diligently.”
The Edo State Judicial Service Commission comprises Hon. Felix Imoisili, Esq. (as a key member), Prof. David Osarumwense Osifo, Omozogie Martin Ighekpe, and Hon. Usman Dauda. The commission is tasked with overseeing judicial appointments, discipline, and overall efficiency in the state's judiciary.
Speaking on behalf of both the Judicial Service Commission and the Polytechnic Governing Council, Hon. Felix Imoisili, Esq., expressed gratitude to the Governor for the appointment and pledged unwavering commitment to advancing Edo's development.
“Out of a population of over four million people, we have been nominated and appointed to serve under your government,” Imoisili said, noting, “We assure you that we will work with you to move Edo beyond its current level. We appreciate you very profoundly for this privilege.”
The inauguration of the Judicial Service Commission comes amid broader efforts by the Okpebholo administration to revitalize key institutions in the state.
In a related development, the Governor also swore in the Governing Council of Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, chaired by Hon. Samuel Oboh.
Other council members include Dr. Abdul Wasiu Oyakhire, Isibor Philips Isa Osaremen, Igbinadolor Patience Osamede, Louis Amienwan Okojie, Dr. Anthony Oyase Atogwe, and Doris Braimah.
The dual inauguration underscore Governor Okpebholo's focus on institutional reforms, which he has pursued since assuming office one year ago.
Analysts view the reconstitution of the Judicial Service Commission as a timely move to enhance judicial independence and efficiency, potentially reducing case backlogs and improving access to justice for Edo residents.
