Awka, Anambra – The European Union (EU) has underscored its commitment to fostering credible and inclusive electoral processes in Nigeria through a coordinated effort during the recent Anambra State governorship election.
For the first time, civil society partners under the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme operated from a shared Election Observation Hub, ensuring real-time data coordination, gender and accessibility updates, and unified messaging.
The initiative, highlighted in a post by the EU Delegation to Nigeria on X (formerly Twitter), showcased the hub's role in monitoring electoral integrity, violence, and security.
The hub's dashboard, featured real-time statistics and pie charts detailing various aspects of the election process, including voter turnout, accessibility for persons with disabilities, and incidents of violence.
Laolu Olawumi, the EU's Governance Adviser for Democracy, Rule of Law, and Gender, emphasized the significance of this collaborative approach.
"This election is an opportunity to demonstrate that inclusion and credibility are shared democratic standards," she stated, noting that the hub enabled partners to coordinate evidence, avoid duplication, and deliver a unified assessment of the electoral process.
Key features of the initiative included the deployment of 150 trained observers focused on accessibility for persons with disabilities and 25 sign language interpreters at polling units with high numbers of registered deaf voters.
Additionally, over 700 dedicated citizen observers were deployed across the state to monitor various business processes of the election, ensuring comprehensive coverage and real-time reporting.
The EU-SDGN programme, funded under the EU’s Neighbourhood Development and International Cooperation Instrument, aims to foster a functioning pluralistic, inclusive, participatory, and representative democracy in Nigeria.
This effort aligns with broader objectives to strengthen electoral integrity, counter misinformation, and reinforce public confidence in democratic processes.
The collaborative hub model, described as a "first" for civil society partners, was praised for its efficiency in coordinating data and reports, ensuring that verified information reached the public swiftly.
This approach was particularly crucial in countering the rapid spread of election misinformation, a challenge acknowledged by the cohort of implementing partners.
As the EU continues to support Nigeria's democratic governance, the Anambra election serves as a model for future electoral observations, emphasizing the importance of unity, inclusivity, and transparency in the democratic process.
