Auchi, Edo – The Auchi-Igarra Road in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State has once again become a focal point of public frustration, as a recent inspection by the monitoring group MonITNG reveals a complete lack of progress on promised reconstruction efforts.

Posted on X Saturday, the terrain underscore the dire state of this critical roadway.

Three months ago, the Edo State Government held a highly publicized flag-off ceremony, assuring residents of imminent road reconstruction. However, the site now stands eerily silent, with no contractors, equipment, or preparatory work in sight.

The road, a vital lifeline for Akoko-Edo LGA, remains a quagmire of deep gullies and craters, unchanged despite earlier public outcries.

The consequences are severe.

Local farmers report significant losses of perishable goods due to their inability to transport produce to markets. Residents requiring urgent medical attention face life-threatening delays in reaching facilities in Benin or Okene.

Meanwhile, students and educators are frequently stranded, disrupting education in the region. The economic and social vitality of Akoko-Edo hangs in the balance as the road’s condition continues to deteriorate.

MonITNG’s report highlights the government’s initial ceremony as a hollow gesture, accusing it of misrepresenting its intent.

The group has issued a formal call for accountability, urging the Edo State Government to deploy credible contractors and commence work immediately.

Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration has yet to respond to the latest developments. However, a May 2025 initiative saw the deployment of engineers and surveyors to assess the Auchi-Igarra-Ibillo Federal Road following youth protests, though no substantial action has followed.

The road’s strategic importance, connecting Edo, Kogi, and Ondo States, amplifies the urgency of the situation.
