Akoko-Edo, Edo – In a landmark move showcasing accountability and commitment to its promises, the Edo State Government has successfully mediated a peace agreement between farmers and miners in Dagbala Community, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

The resolution, facilitated by the Ministry of Mining, ends months of disputes over farmlands allocated for mining activities, fostering unity and paving the way for sustainable development in the region.

The breakthrough was achieved during a Stakeholders’ Engagement led by the Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, who headed a high-powered delegation representing the state government.

The meeting addressed longstanding tensions caused by disagreements over compensation for farmlands used for mining, which had fueled distrust and threatened unrest in the community.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Ijegbai reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to fairness and community welfare.

“The government’s role is to ensure fairness, protect livelihoods, and guide investment in a way that uplifts everyone,” he stated.

He reminded attendees of his earlier assurances that the Edo State Government would not allow investors to exploit communities, emphasizing that mining must bring accountability, meaningful development, and lasting benefits to host communities.

The Commissioner urged the people of Dagbala to unite and collaborate with genuine investors while cautioning against illegal miners whose actions undermine progress. “Violence or disunity will hinder the community’s growth and delay the opportunities that regulated mining can bring,” he warned.

Representing the farmers, Chief Eriki Paul expressed gratitude for the government’s swift intervention, noting that the Ministry of Mining’s efforts restored hope in the community.

“The people of Dagbala deeply appreciate the government’s willingness to listen, mediate, and provide fair resolutions,” he said, appealing to the Commissioner to continue facilitating dialogue to resolve future disputes.

A key outcome of the meeting was a consensus on financial compensation for the affected farmlands. Payments were promptly disbursed to farmers, a gesture that drew applause and reinforced confidence in the government’s commitment to community welfare and sustainable resource management.

This resolution marks a significant milestone for Dagbala and Edo State’s broader mining sector. Under the leadership of Governor Sen. Monday Okpebholo, the state government has demonstrated its determination to foster transparent partnerships, protect the rights of its citizens, and ensure that the solid mineral sector contributes directly to grassroots development.
