For nearly two decades, I have not visited Auchi Polytechnic located in Auchi in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.
All i did is pass by the great institution, while navigating Auchi Town, enroute Abuja for NGO conferences that are convened by ANEEJ which executive director is Rev David Ugolor.
Nevertheless, I have always had Auchi Polytechnic on my fertile, green mind..
Why? This citadel of excellence in learning, teaching and research is the first tertiary institution as well as technology powerhouse in the old Midwest Region created in 1963. Fortunately enough, the school was founded the same year in 1963 and named MIDWEST TECHNICAL COLLEGE, AUCHI.
Invariably, the institution is about 62 year old today with a population of over 10,000 students and tentative gestational plan to transform into a University of Science and Technology in no distant future.
BENDEL Mirror checks reveals that the school over time has undergone several progressive evolutionary transformations. For instance, from being a state monotechnic the institution migrated to a full-blown polytechnic in 1973.
This is after shedding off all courses including education programmes it is offering that is not in tandem with pure technology content. Given this status, AUCHI POLYTECHNIC joined the league of the best four first generation polytechnics in Nigeria.
Later, in 1994, the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida graciously gave approval for the federal government to takeover the school. In simple, plain language AUCHI POLYTECHNIC became a federal institution in 1994.
On the 28th August, 2025 I arrived Auchi Town on natural medicine advocacy visit there. The next day, i set out for the big institution to see the staff and students for a smart talk on proper nutrition, and the trending successful healing science of alkaline water as well as stem cell therapy bringing cures to ailments orthodox medicine cannot handle today.
Behold!! Do you know what I saw at the gate of the institution? It was still the old, anachronistic graying name AUCHI POLYTECHNIC, AUCHI emblazoned at the gate.
Methinks, there is an obtuse over delay in correctly re-naming and also rebranding the school FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, AUCHI.
William Shakespeare in a line in ROMEO AND JULIET says: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any name would smell just as sweet"
Lies! Falsehood!! An appropriate name is relevant. So, the hardworking rector of the institution should liaise with TetFund to immediately give the school its accurate nomenclature.
