Awka, Anambra – The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has announced an indefinite ban on the popular ‘signing out’ ceremony usually observed by graduating students after their final examinations.
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday in Awka by the University Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, who confirmed that the ban takes immediate effect.
According to the statement, the management decided on the ban following repeated cases of violence, chaos, and disruption of academic activities linked to the celebration.
Okeke noted that the gatherings have become a security concern as unauthorised individuals often infiltrate the campus during the events, posing risks to both students and staff.
“The university emphasises that the ‘signing out’ practices have grown into unruly gatherings, sometimes resulting in disorderly conduct, threats to safety, and property damage. Any student found engaging in the banned activity will face severe disciplinary action, including possible rustication,” the statement read.
The Registrar further warned outsiders against entering the campus to participate in or encourage the activity, stressing that such individuals risk arrest and prosecution for breach of peace.
Reaffirming the institution’s commitment to safety and academic excellence, Okeke urged students to remain focused on their studies and report any misconduct or threats to the appropriate authorities.
With this policy, UNIZIK joins other Nigerian universities that have clamped down on rowdy ‘sign out’ celebrations, prioritising security and order over tradition.
